Homework 1-13-11

Explain what happened in that mountain village we described in class. You explanation will need to include detail that includes density and molecular weight of gases.

At standard temperature and pressure, carbon dioxide has as density around 1.98 kg/m^3, about 1.5 times that of air. As temperature and pressure increase or decrease, the concentration of carbon dioxide changes form as a solid, liquid or a gas. At higher concentrations carbon dioxide can be lethal to life. Amounts above 5,000 ppm can be dangerous and amounts above 50,000 can be lethal. What could have happened in the scenario is that the carbon dioxide was in it's form of a gas containing more concentration than permeable to a human, therefore causing death.
