Activity 4 1-11-11 Water?

What elements make up water?
  • Hydrogen and Oxygen
Is water an ionic compound or a covalent compound?
  • Covalent
What is the shape of water?
  • Water is usually described as being an L shaped with two hydrogen attached to one oxygen
Why does water stick to itself?
  • Water has the ability to stick easily to itself due to cohesion. Cohesion refers to the intermolecular attraction of like-molecules and forms droplets.
Why does water not stick to or mix with oil?
  • Water does not stick to hydrophobic substances such as oil because water has both a positive and a negative charge, therefore able to stick together, but oil molecules have no charge. The oil molecules are more attracted to each other, therefore separating from the water and bonding on its own.
