Homework 1 1-19-11

Use the pH paper to develop a table and graph of the pH of common things around your home. Think in terms of at least 10 different liquids.

Develop an experiment to see how much antacid is needed to neutralize an acidic liquid.

Beer- 6 pH
Dish soap- 8 pH
Vegetable oil- 4 pH
Water- 7 pH
Gin- 6 pH
Grape Juice- 2 pH
Diet Mountain Dew- 3 pH
Windshield Washer Fluid- 6 pH
Vodka- 3 pH
Perfume- 6 pH
Vinegar- 2 pH

After testing the pH levels of all the liquids, I tried testing 2oz of grape juice to see how much Tums it would take to neutralize it. I wanted to test the grape juice because it was the highest pH level. First I put in one tablet (200mg) of Tums and continuously stirred it so that it would dissolve. I thought it would take more antacid to neutralize the grape juice because it was the most acidic, but it didn't. I'm thinking if it were a larger amount of grape juice it would have taken more but since it was only 2oz, it neutralized right away. After the antacid was added to the grape juice it turned a foggy purple.
