Activity 1 1-18-11 Burning candle observation

What is burning? Show the chemical formula and an image of the structure.
  • There are two parts of a candle that make it burn: the wick and the fuel. The liquid wax is absorbed into the wick and keep the candle burning. The heat of the flame then vaporizes the wax and it is then the wax vapor that actually burns.

Write the chemical reaction.
  •  The chemical reaction is a simple combustion. The oxygen comes from the air and the heat comes from an outside source such as a lighter or match. When the combustion reaction happens, it makes water and carbon dioxide as well as heat and light energy.
Write the balanced chemical reaction.
  • C^25H^52+38O^2-->25CO^2+26H^2O
Write the chemical reaction for butane
  • 2C^4H^10+13O^2-->8CO^2+10H^2O
