Activity 3 1-20-11 Gas Excitation Spectra

Observations without glasses:
  • different colors
Observations with the glasses on:
  • orange = the colors expand out creating a spectrum of red and orange lines to the right and left. fewer lines with orange being the brightest
  • pink/purple = helium. the color spectrum lines were much further apart but very bright and more lines. traveling to another energy level to another orbital. wall electricity excites the electron to another orbital.
  • purple = argon. about a foot to the left and right there was a slight color spectrum
  • nitrogen = the color spectrum was very close together and bright. above it were thin lines of the color spectrum. most of the observations had the spectrum above and below but not distinct lines like on the sides 
  • carbon dioxide = this also showed the color spectrum on both sides with lines
