Activity 1 1-13-11 Surface Chemical Make-up

What is the chemicals and their structures that make up cardboard?
  • Cardboard is made out of processed wood, which is made from plant cells. Trees take carbon dioxide and water to grow. About 33% of all plant matter is cellulose. It is the most common organic compound on Earth. Cellulose consists of D-glucose units which condense through glycosidic bonds.
What is the chemicals and their structures that make up Styrofoam?
  • The chemical makeup of polystyrene is a long chain hydrocarbon with every other carbon connected to a phenyl group. Polystyrene's chemical formula is (C8H8)n.
What is the chemicals and their structures that make up wax?
  • CnH2n+2
  • hydrocarbons
Explain why water is attracted to cardboard and not Styrofoam?
  • the electronegativity with water and Styrofoam do not attract as well as water molecules and cardboard.
